Good packing is the biggest reason a move goes damage free. This printable packing checklist uses the same methods our packers use every day: the right supplies, the right box for each item, and labels that tell the crew exactly where everything goes.

Packing supplies

Small, medium and large boxes, plus dish packs and wardrobe boxes
Packing paper (unprinted) and bubble wrap
Packing tape and a tape gun
Thick markers for labeling
Stretch wrap for drawers and loose parts
Zip bags for screws and hardware, taped to the furniture they belong to

How to pack any box

Heavy items in small boxes, light items in large boxes.
Fill empty space with paper so nothing shifts.
Keep boxes under about 50 pounds so they can be carried safely.
Tape the bottom and top seams fully.
Label each box on the side with the room and contents, and mark FRAGILE where needed.

Kitchen

Wrap plates individually and pack them on edge.
Use cell dividers for glasses and stemware.
Pack small appliances in their own boxes with cords taped down.
Use up open food. Seal spices and oils in zip bags.

Bedrooms and closets

Hang clothes in wardrobe boxes straight from the closet.
Leave light clothing in dresser drawers and stretch wrap the drawers closed.
Bag bedding and pillows, and keep one set of sheets for the first night.
Remove bed hardware and bag it with the frame.

Bathrooms

Toss expired medicines and products.
Seal liquids in zip bags and pack them upright.
Carry prescriptions and daily medications with you.

Living room and home office

Wrap lamps and shades separately.
Photograph TV and computer connections before unplugging.
Pack books flat in small boxes.
Back up computers before the move.
Ask about white glove packing for art, mirrors and antiques.

Garage, basement and outdoor

Drain fuel and oil from mowers and power equipment.
Bundle long handled tools together.
Dispose of paint, propane, fuel and chemicals before move day, since movers cannot carry flammable or hazardous materials.
Empty and clean grills, and remove propane tanks.

Carry these yourself

Medications, important documents and passports
Jewelry, cash and small valuables
Phones, laptops and chargers
Pet supplies and a change of clothes
