How to Prepare for Your Move: A Move-Week Game Plan From Our Crew

The last week before a move is when everything happens at once. The boxes are half packed, the closing papers are on the counter, and the to-do list keeps getting longer.

The good news: move week is the easiest week to plan, because you know exactly what’s coming. This is the same game plan our On-Site Move Coordinators walk families through before every Better Choice move, broken into four simple check-ins: five days out, three days out, the day before, and move day itself.

Planning further ahead? Start with our 8-week moving checklist and our room-by-room packing checklist, then come back here for move week.

5 days before: get organized

  • Finish the rooms you use least. Basement, attic, guest room, off-season clothes. If they’re done now, the rest of the week feels lighter.
  • Label every box on the side, not just the top. Write the room it’s going to at your new home. Stacked boxes hide their tops; sides stay visible so our crew can place them right the first time.
  • Sort out parking at both homes. Save a spot close to the door for the truck, and check HOA, building or township rules for elevators, permits and move times.
  • Set aside your “travel with me” bin. Medications, jewelry, passports, closing documents, laptops. These ride with you, not on the truck.
  • Short on time? Our team can take packing off your plate with partial packing or full-service packing.

3 days before: confirm the details

  • Tell your coordinator about anything new. A new piece of furniture, a tight stairway, a closing time that moved. Small details help us bring the right crew, truck and equipment.
  • Empty, defrost and dry the fridge if it’s coming with you, so it’s ready to travel.
  • Drain gas and oil from mowers, trimmers and grills, and set aside propane tanks, paint and cleaners. Those can’t ride on a moving truck.
  • Plan the day for kids and pets. A grandparent, a friend or a sitter keeps everyone happy and safe while doors are open.
  • Closing dates don’t line up? Read how move-and-store works with our vault storage in Quakertown.

The day before: pack your first-night box

  • Pack a first-night box with phone chargers, toiletries, sheets, towels, a change of clothes, snacks, paper plates and the coffee maker. Night one in the new home is so much better with it.
  • Empty dresser drawers of anything fragile, heavy or loose.
  • Take down TVs and wall décor, or let us know if you’d like our crew to help.
  • Meet your movers. You’ll get your crew leader’s name and your arrival window before move day, so you know exactly who’s coming. Here’s more on the Better Choice move day experience.

Move day: let us handle the heavy lifting

  • Clear a path from each room to the door, and keep walkways and steps dry.
  • Do a quick walkthrough with your crew leader when the crew arrives. Point out anything extra fragile and anything that’s staying behind.
  • Relax while we protect your home. Our crews lay floor runners, pad banisters and door jambs, and blanket wrap every piece of furniture.
  • Do a final walkthrough together before the truck leaves each home, so nothing gets left behind.
